Anchorage Assembly reveals options for new city seal with Dena’ina designs
1+ day, 2+ hour ago (469+ words) As the Municipality of Anchorage nears the end of its 50th anniversary year, city leaders hope to incorporate the traditional quillwork designs of the Dena'ina people into its long-standing municipal seal. The current seal features a widely recognized blue anchor and gold-sailed ship under the midnight sun, with an airplane soaring overhead. The emblem, created by local artist Joan Kimura, represents explorer Captain James Cook's search for the Northwest Passage. Conversations surrounding the seal picked up again this year, during the municipality's 50th anniversary campaign and its ongoing wayfinding project downtown. The municipality partnered with the Anchorage Park Foundation to commission local Dena'ina artist Sebastian Garber for the seal redesign. Four different versions of the seal crafted by Garber, along with the original one, are now open for feedback through an online survey. The survey is open through Dec. 16, the same day…...

3+ day, 12+ hour ago (878+ words) The Anchorage Education Association and Anchorage School District have been unable to agree on a new contract for teachers, and will make their case before an arbitrator at the end of January. As that process moves ahead, the teachers union late this month warned they may hold a vote on whether to approve a strike. The district and union " which represents 2,830 Anchorage teachers " are not legally bound to follow whatever decision the arbitrator issues, but it sets the stage for potential actions from either the district or the union members. When mediation efforts fail, Alaska law requires both parties to wait at least 90 days after an arbitrator is selected before taking action. They agreed to an arbitrator on Nov. 13, starting the 90-day clock. That means that starting Feb. 11, Anchorage teachers can legally go on strike, and the district can impose…...

Over the last two decades, Alaska has experienced several "record setting" fire seasons, with more than 16 million acres burned since 2004, according to data from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Dufek is at the head of the municipality's recent push to rewrite its community wildfire protection plan, which hasn't been updated in nearly 20 years. The refresh will help residents stay prepared and make it easier for Anchorage to seek federal grants to reduce its fire risk, she said. Approximately 82% of Anchorage falls within the wildland-urban interface, a factor that inherently…...
